The interesting thing is that many bankers are looking at all of this activity as if it has little meaning or impact on their business at this point in time. I think part of that may be that there is a fundamental misunderstanding of how the mobile can be utilized in the banking and payments space.

Engadget: A week with Google Wallet (19.9.11): Contactless payments have been something of a curiosity in the credit card industry. MasterCard’s PayPass has been around for the better part of a decade, but merchants and banks alike seem hesitant to adopt the technology required to make the system work, and inconsistent implementation adds to the confusion — particularly for customers. Google’s new mobile phone-based Wallet service has the potential to transform the technology from its current status as a transaction turkey, …

MPT: The most important mobile payment infographic. Ever. (5.9.11)

americanbanker: Google Holding Steady on Mobile Wallet Plans (25.7.11): In the race to give consumers an easy way to make payments via mobile phone, Google is sticking to its battle plan in the face of formidable competition from ISIS, the market’s other front-runner. The technologies used by the search giant and ISIS, a consortium backed by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, are similar in that each enables customers to make payments by waving mobile devices near retailers’ point-of-sale terminals.

Finance 2.0: In meiner Tankstelle…

Brett King: “Extending the mobile payments ecosystem” (29.6.11): Today I’ve been in Beetsterzwaag, Opsterland, Netherlands, about 150 kilometers from Amsterdam at an offsite strategic retreat with the ICS (International Card Services) team. Initially part of Bank of America’s presence in the Netherlands, ICS today is an independent subsidiary of ABN Amro NV, but works in the provision of a range of card services around issuance, promotion, processing and so forth. ICS has around 3 million customers today, and the session we had was around the implications of mobile payments in the form of NFC, P2P and other initiatives such as cardless loyalty program implementations.

Tagesspiegel: Mobile Payment Wenn das Handy zahlt (9.6.11):Mobilfunk- und Internetfirmen wollen Kreditkarten überflüssig und Banken Konkurrenz machen. Marktforscher rechnen mit enormen Wachstumsraten beim mobilen Bezahlen. Das tun sie allerdings schon seit Jahren.

BI: The War on Digital Currency (9.6.11): A joke for you, Fellow Reckoner: How many Senators does it take to change a light bulb? Oh, wait, we’ve got a better one: How many Senators does it take to dismantle a cryptographically secured, completely decentralized, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network of voluntary, free market traders exchanging goods and services across six continents using tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of individual computers and some of the most advanced cyber technology and software coding known to date?
